Jake Baddeley

Over the summer Smelik & Stokking, my gallery in The Hague, has been exhibiting some new paintings.

I am particularly thrilled by these works, although the technique is an experiment, something I have never attempted before, the rich and deep glow that resulted surprised me.as above so below - 35x35 cm

One of my greatest inspirations is Leonardo da Vinci, whose “sfumato” technique has remained a mystery (to me at least) until now. I have set myself the task of making some panels using his technique, if not his style.

This is achieved by using a special painting medium called glacé, which increases the transparency, and luminosity of the paint while retaining the brilliance of the colour.

This also allows very soft transition of shadows, which was Da Vinci’s trademark.

There seems to be a definite correlation between the enjoyment I get from making a work and the satisfaction of the client, as most were sold in a few days.

I have also been busy building new sculptures

One of the more successful themes is “fish” made from bits and pieces of broken house-hold objects bolted together. They incorporate various principles that one might find in a Hi-Fi, vacuum cleaner, or other such item, as well as giving light, as they double as lamps. My interest in science has allowed me to manipulate these parts into a new whole, reuniting art with science, form with function and principle with proportion.

They can have propellers that are driven by the heat of the lamp inside it, magnets that generate energy when the mouth opens and closes, solar panels that make LED’s flash, and so on. The possibilities seem endless. My aim is too find a way too create a movement from waist energy given off by the lamp. Energy that otherwise would go unused.

Have a look on the website for these new sculptures

Dreamscape - International Exhibition of Imaginary Realism

29th of November - 7th of December 2008 - Amsterdam

Together with the exhibition the new Dreamscape publication will be released, a collection aimed at bringing together the best of Contemporary Visionary, Surreal and Symbolist Artists from around the world.

I have been invited to join in this exhibition and publication alongside artists such as Lucas Kandl and Michael Parkes, and together we hope to be able to promote this genre and generate a wider public interest.
