This is a composition inspired by the portraits of the Dutch golden age where the wealthy and influential aristocracy were presented in their finery. Elements from this genre have been incorporated into my own imaginary world, where the protagonist confronts the gaze of the viewer as if we are interrupting a private moment alone. But the paying cards suggest that she is sharing this intimate moment with the viewer and revealing her cards in trust.

I was delighted to come across Jake's art. The process of discovery and acquisition of the print have been wonderfully human and pleasant. Mark is an absolute delight in correspondence. I can't wait to have the print back from the framers' and hang it on my wall. I may just place a chair before it and sit with it when I feel in need of a meaningful conversation.
