This painting depicts one of the two the sacred rivers that ran through the underworld, according to Ancient Greek myth. To drink from the Lethe would make you forget about the life you just led and you would reincarnate into the world, oblivious of your past life. If you drank from the other river, the Mnemosyne, you would remember the life you had led and you progressed into Paradise.
The theme then is the forgetting of ones true self as we become lost in the world of form, and the process of remembering, of waking up, as the soul learns of its true nature.

I was delighted to come across Jake's art. The process of discovery and acquisition of the print have been wonderfully human and pleasant. Mark is an absolute delight in correspondence. I can't wait to have the print back from the framers' and hang it on my wall. I may just place a chair before it and sit with it when I feel in need of a meaningful conversation.
